| Access Control |
| Strong Two-Factor Authentication |
| To launch the application and gain access to the data (both local and shared), users must provide
authentication by inputting the login credentials (username and passphrase) which are uniquely tied to the USB device assigned
to them at provisioning time. This implies that users must have knowledge of their login credentials and also have access to
their personal USB token before they can use the application. |
| Strong Login Credentials |
| The e-Capsule™ File Server application uses login credentials much longer than standard passwords
(which are typically from 4 to 8 characters long). The e-Capsule™ strong credentials are in the form of strings with up to 255
characters, containing any case sensitive character (including spaces and symbols). |
| Security Clearance |
| Optional: Access to the data is also determined by the user's individual
Security Clearance, which ranges from Confidential to Top Secret over five security levels. When browsing inside
of a shared folder, the users' will not see files with a Security Rating higher than their Security Clearance. |
| Repository Data Management |
| The e-Capsule™ File Server allows storing any number of files and folders inside of a data repository
which is kept permanently encrypted. The repository can be located on any network attached device and can be accessed by authorized
users from any desktop or laptop. |
| Repository File/Folder Encryption |
| Files are stored as encrypted (AES256) data chunks which are never decrypted on the repository,
but only when downloaded on the client side by authorized users. |
| Security Rating |
| Optional: Each file can be classified according to a scale which ranges from
Confidential to Top Secret over five levels. The actions that users can perform on a file are related to its
classification through a Security Rating Table, which lists the allowed operations for each of the five security levels.
| Audit Logs |
| The e-Capsule™ File Server allows tracking usage of all the files stored in the encrypted repository
by providing a complete log of the actions performed since the file was uploaded. This log can be exported and used for auditing
purposes. |
| Digital Shredding |
| It is practically impossible to recover any clear trace of a file's content once it is digitally
shredded from the e-Capsule™ File Server. On the client side, digital shredding is implemented by sequential repeated overwriting
with cryptographically secure pseudo-random bit sequences. This procedure provides deletion well above the standard dictated by
the U.S. Ministry of Defense (DOD 5220.22-M/NISPOM 8-306). What this accomplishes in practice is a level of data destruction far
beyond the recovery capabilities of even the most sophisticated tools. |
| Secure View |
| The Secure View feature allows displaying the content of data originally stored in open formats
(i.e. JPEG,BITMAP, GIF, PDF, TEXT , RTF, PNG, TIFF, ICO, and XPM) without the need to share clear (non-encrypted) data
with other external applications. The files are downloaded and kept in a secure memory buffer while displayed on the screen of
the client computer. After the user exits the Secure View interface, the memory buffer is permanently shredded of all
data and released for further use. |
| Time expiration |
| It is possible to set the date and time at which a file will be automatically removed and permanently
deleted from the encrypted repository. This function allows sharing a file with a group of users for a limited amount of time,
without needing to worry about removing it after the deadline expires. |
| Send to User |
| This feature allows sending any number of encrypted files to other users of the e-Capsule™ File Server.
The recipients will receive an online alert informing them of the incoming files, which will be kept in a reserved storage area
until they are retrieved. |
| Share with Group |
| This feature allows sharing any number of files or folders with other users the e-Capsule™ File Server
belonging to the same Group. It is possible to share data stored on both the repository or on the local computer. Once
shared, the data is automatically encrypted and uploaded to the target repository folder accessible to all users belonging to
the Group. |
| Safe Editing |
| Opening or editing a file stored in the e-Capsule™ File Server using external applications inevitably
exposes the information contained in the file to a possible breach of confidentiality or even to malicious infections. The
Safe Editing feature helps minimize risks by controlling the location of clear temporary files (which are digitally
shredded after usage) and by automatically uploading the modified files to their original locations inside of the repository
or of the local encrypted containers. |
| Local Data Management |
| Local File/Folder Encryption |
| For the protection of files and folders stored on local desktops and laptops, the e-Capsule™ File Server
client application utilizes encrypted containers whose structure is totally meaningless to the PC operating system, to external
processes and to other applications. The local containers use strong AES25 encryption at the file block level, i.e. at
the level of the smallest contiguous set of bits or bytes that forms an identifiable unit of data. |
| Shielded Browsing |
| The security of the sensitive files and folders stored in the local encrypted containers is never handed
over to the operating system of the PC even when browsing inside of them. In fact, the data is kept encrypted at all times and the
containers' structure is unknown to the operating system. |
| Drag & Drop Operations |
| The e-Capsule™ File Server supports standard drag & drop operations for moving files to/from the
local storages and the shared repository. |
| Safe Editing |

| Digital Shredding |

| Send to User |

| Share with Group |

| Upload & Shred |
| This feature allows uploading files to the e-Capsule™ File Server and then digitally shredding the
clear originals with one single instruction, thereby leaving no traces on the local PC. |
