When dealing with protection of digital information (in the form of files, folders, images, multi-media content, etc.)
achieving security cannot be simply equated to encryption. To explain why this is the case, let's take the more familiar example
of using a combination lock to protect the contents of your private vault. Imagine that your vault has a side door that also opens
each time you open the main lock. In this case, anyone having access to the side door can easily steal the contents of your private
vault after you've opened it.
In a similar way, standard encryption applications which are integrated with the PC operating system (OS) after the initial
access control step (login) end up sharing with the OS all the interfaces and procedures needed to access the encrypted files. The
technical reason for this exposure lies with the fact that such applications use well known standard file systems (e.g. NTFS or FAT32)
to save the encrypted files. This is equivalent to the side door vulnerability of the previous example, since any virus, trojan or
spyware can access the encrypted files at the same rate as the operating system can access them.
The approach taken by e-Capsule™ Private Safe is drastically different, inasmuch as it uses a proprietary file system unknown to
the OS and with new and extended security features. The immediate advantage is to block exposure to the OS even while the application
is running and while the user is browsing the file system contents. Furthermore, the flexible structure of the e-Capsule™ file system
allows attaching to any file or folder a set of extended attributes which can be used to regulate or track usage (for example, allowing
to view the contents of a file but not allowing it to be decrypted and extracted from the file system).
No, there's no way we can help you to recover your forgotten Username and/or Passphrase. However, the problem can be solved if
you only forgot some of the users' credentials but still remember or can have access to the Administrator's login credentials. In
fact, by accessing the application as Administrator and selecting Tools » Change Credentials it will be possible to
reset all the levels' login credentials.
In the unfortunate event that you're totally locked out of e-Capsule™ Private Safe, to resume usage you can only completely
uninstall and reinstall the application. This will allow you to resume using the application, but will also remove all the data
previously stored in the e-Capsule™ file system.
Not necessarily. You can use the application also just accessing it from one of the two standard user levels (Private or Public). Also
in this case your data will be fully protected and you'll simply give up some of the additional features that are available to the other
access levels (such as those reserved only to the Administrator).
One of the most unique features of e-Capsule™ Private Safe is the fact that the login procedure is executed in a completely stealth
or concealed mode, i.e. in such a way that an external observer will never be able to distinguish between an access done at the
Administrator, Public, Private or Shred levels. In other words, the user experience, the features and the application interface
elements (window appearance, buttons, functions, etc.) are exactly the same at all levels. Therefore, you are the only person knowing
at which level you have actually accessed the application, which has the ability to obscure or hide from third parties the entry point
to the encrypted file system.
There is absolutely no difference between the Private and Public levels in terms of the application security or encryption strength
(AES256) of the stored data. What differentiates the two levels is only their respective data sets (i.e. files and folders), which are
kept strictly confidential and restricted to each access level. It is only the user that decides how/when to access the Private and
Public levels and what to store at each level.
The application won't be able to access anymore the file system. In other words, deleting the safe.efs or safe.eck files corresponds
to resetting the application, which the next time will restart from scratch just like after a new clean installation.
It seems that the application's U3 package was corrupted and the Launchpad cannot spawn the process anymore and therefore cannot
open the e-Capsule™ Safe window.
There are a few actions that may have caused this problem:
improper removal of the USB device while the application is running
shutting off the PC without first quitting the application (e.g. following a power failure)
PC operating system crash
You need to remember that the executable code of the e-Capsule™ U3 application is stored on the Removable Disk partition of the
U3 device. Differently from the CD partition where the U3 System files are stored, the Removable Disk partition is accessible
with read-write privileges (just like any normal USB drive) and therefore can be damaged if handled improperly (similarly to
what causes data loss on hard drives after system crashes).
When all other attempts fail (did you try rebooting your PC?), the best solution to this problem is a removal (uninstall) of
the e-Capsule™ U3 application, followed by a clean re-install of a new e-Capsule™ U3 package. When given a choice, you should first
try to reinstall while keeping the application's data and settings. In fact, a full uninstall will delete also the entire file
system data and require you to reconfigure your e-Capsule™ Private Safe from scratch.
This is the step-by-step procedure you need to follow for uninstalling e-Capsule™ Private Safe U3:
Go to U3 Launchpad » Manage U3 Programs.
Select e-Capsule™ Safe from the left panel and click Remove program.
During the application removal procedure you will be asked whether you wish to save your personal settings and data files
of Private Safe. Click Yes.
To reinstall the e-Capsule™ Private Safe on your U3 drive you need to:
Go to U3 Launchpad » Add Programs » Install from my computer
Find the e-Capsule™ Safe U3 package and select it to launch the installation.
If asked, don't accept usage of old settings and data but require the application to reset all values.
Most likely some file system blocks in use during the last operations you performed have been damaged and may not be recovered.
However, in most cases the internal restore process will be able to fix these problems and allow you to login again after a clean
restart. If you keep getting this error message it means that the damage cannot be fixed internally and you'll need to remove and
reinstall the application from the U3 Launchpad. Please remember not to remove the USB device while the application is open and
especially when the USB LED is blinking (i.e. when data is being written/read on the flash memory).
using the login credentials listed in the e-Capsule™ Private Safe order confirmation email sent to you after your purchase.
Launch the e-Capsule™ Private Safe application from the U3 Launchpad of the USB device on which you want to install the license.
When you see the dialog window which prompts you to Try, Buy or Enter license, click: Buy now. You will be redirected to the EISST license request page.
In the EISST license request page, choose I ALREADY HAVE A PREPAID LICENSE NUMBER option and enter (you can use Copy/Paste) the following license number:
(xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx)
Click PROCEED.
Please allow up to 24hrs for the license provisioning process to complete. You will then receive a last email with a link from which you can download the product license for your USB device. Save the license file in some location on your PC.
Start the e-Capsule™ Private Safe again and click Enter license when you see the dialog box which invites you to either Try, Buy or Enter a valid license. Locate the downloaded license saved on your PC and click Open.
The downloaded license and the application will thus be fully installed and activated!
IMPORTANT: The e-Capsule™ Private Safe product license is restricted to the USB device used for requesting the purchase. In other words, the application can be used only from one single U3 device at a time since the product license is tied to one unit's serial number.
More detailed instructions with screenshots on how to request and download the license are available at:
You can contact technical support also by sending an email to: Quick contact form, describing clearly the problem you
are having, providing the steps to replicate it and including information on the PC operating system and application version.
The problem with creating a container larger than 4 GB is caused by the fact that your external drive uses a FAT32 file system. We suggest that you switch to NTFS which will remove the 4GB limitation.
