e-Capsule™ Private Browser USB-U3

  1. What are the minimum system requirements for running e-Capsule™ Private Browser?

    Processor IBM PC or compatible with Pentium III 500-megahertz (MHz) or higher (Pentium IV recommended);
    Memory 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM (256 MB recommended);
    Operating System Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Professional SP4
    Microsoft® Windows® XP- all versions
    Microsoft® Windows® Vista
    Display 800 x 600 resolution, 256 colors minimum, (16-bit color recommended)
  2. How does the anonymous surfing feature of e-Capsule™ Private Browser help protect my identity?

Using the anonymous surfing feature of e-Capsule™ Private Browser has the effect of handling your web traffic using Onion routing, a technique for pseudonymous (or anonymous) communication over a computer network, developed by David Goldschlag, Michael Reed, and Paul Syverson. Onion routing helps to reduce the risks of both simple and sophisticated traffic analysis by distributing your transactions over several places on the Internet, so no single point can link you to your destination. The idea is similar to using a twisty, hard-to-follow route in order to throw off somebody who is tailing you - and then periodically erasing your footprints. Instead of taking a direct route from source to destination, data packets take a random pathway through several servers that cover your tracks so no observer at any single point can tell where the data came from or where it is going.

To create a private network pathway with Onion routing, e-Capsule™ Private Browser incrementally builds a circuit of encrypted connections through servers on the network. The circuit is extended one hop at a time, and each server along the way knows only which server gave it data and which server it is giving data to. No individual server ever knows the complete path that a data packet has taken.

From the above description it is clear that the anonymous surfing feature of e-Capsule™ Private Browser may (and in most cases will) degrade your web browsing speed. It is for this reason that anonymous surfing is not a default feature, but can be activated at any time with a single toolbar click when deemed necessary.

  3. I forgot my secret Passphrase and I can't get into e-Capsule™ Private Browser anymore. Is there any way I can recover it?

Unfortunately, there's no way to recover your forgotten Passphrase (except maybe using hypnosis…but we don't support this procedure). To resume usage of e-Capsule™ Private Browser you must completely uninstall and reinstall the application. This will allow you to resume using the application, but will also remove all the data previously stored in your encrypted user profile.

  4. I would like to keep two e-Capsule™ Browser sessions open simultaneously, but when I try to launch the application again I get an error message saying: "Another program instance is already running. Aborting".

For security reasons, it is not possible to run two e-Capsule™ Browser processes at the same time. However, we see no reason why you should want to do this. In fact, the Tab-based browsing environment allows you to open as many web pages as you wish and to operate on them simultaneously with a high efficiency.

  5. Why can't I browse on some web pages?

You need to check the Preferences of e-Capsule™ Private Browser, since there are a few settings that may cause this problem, such as having disabled the use of Java, Java Script or cookies. To check if this is the case, you need to open the Display Settings and Privacy Settings by taking the following steps:

    • Click on Edit (from the Menu bar) » Preferences » Display Settings and check the Enable Java and Enable Java Script options
    • Click on Edit (from the Menu bar) » Preferences » Privacy Settings and check the Allow all cookies option
  6. Why can't I display images from some Web pages?

Web pages are made of text and of images. You can decide the extent by which to allow downloading and displaying images from Web sites. If you want to allow displaying all images you need to enable this option taking the following steps:

    • Click on Edit (from the Menu bar) » Preferences » Privacy Settings and check the Load all images option
  7. I'm connected to the Internet but e-Capsule™ Private Browser cannot access Internet and always returns the Address Not Found error message.

We suggest you check the Proxy Settings in the Preferences window. In fact, you may have forgotten to properly configure these parameters in case your PC is connecting to the Internet from behind a proxy server.

    • Click on Edit (from the Menu bar) » Preferences » Proxy Settings

As you will see, the Proxy Settings window allows you to manually enter the proxy data depending on the local network configuration under which you are operating. A quick attempt to fixing the problem is to check the Auto detect Proxy option and retry to load the web page. If you still cannot connect, you may try to enter the existing Internet Explorer settings found under the IE Tools menu at: Internet Options » Connections » Lan Settings. If also this doesn't help, then we suggest you contact your Internet provider or network administrator to obtain details on the proper connection parameters.

  8. I'm trying to view a web page with a flash animation, but nothing happens and I see a puzzle-like icon instead of the animation.

To display Flash animations, e-Capsule™ private Browser needs a special Shockwave plug-in which can be obtained from http://www.adobe.com following these steps:

    • click on the puzzle-like icon
    • a new Tab now opens with information from the Adobe web site
    • click on the download button to obtain a file called install_flash_player
    • save the plugin installer somewhere on your PC or on a USB drive
    • launch the installer by double-clicking on it

You should now be able to view the animation by simply clicking again on the puzzle-like icon from the first web site. Please note that while installing Shockwave Flash Player, your e-Capsule™ Private Browser must be open and running.

  9. I imported my Internet Explorer favorites into e-Capsule™ Browser some time ago. Since then I added several other bookmarks. Is there some way I can export these bookmarks and load them back to IE?

Yes. To export all your e-Capsule™ Private Browser bookmarks as an HTML file you need to follow these steps:

    • Click on Bookmarks (from the Menu bar) » Manage Bookmarks

This will open the Manage Bookmarks window. Now click on the File menu item, select Export Bookmarks to HTML format, and choose the location where you wish to save the html file.

You can then import this file into Internet Explorer by launching the Import/Export Wizard selecting Import and Export… from the File menu of IE.

  10. I'm trying to launch e-Capsule™ Private Browser from the U3 Launchpad but nothing happens.

It seems that the application's U3 package was corrupted and the Launchpad cannot spawn the process anymore and therefore cannot open the e-Capsule™ Private Browser window.

There are a few actions that may have caused this problem:

    • improper removal of the USB device while the application is running
    • shutting off the PC without first quitting the application (e.g. following a power failure)
    • PC operating system crash

You need to remember that the executable code of the e-Capsule™ U3 application is stored on the Removable Disk partition of the U3 device. Differently from the CD partition where the U3 System files are stored, the Removable Disk partition is accessible with read-write privileges (just like any normal USB drive) and therefore can be damaged if handled improperly (similarly to what causes data loss on hard drives after system crashes).

When all other attempts fail (did you try rebooting your PC?), the best solution to this problem is a removal (uninstall) of the e-Capsule™ U3 application, followed by a clean re-install of a new e-Capsule™ U3 package. When given a choice, you should first try to reinstall while keeping the application's data and settings. In fact, a full uninstall will delete also the entire file system data and require you to reconfigure your e-Capsule™ Private Browser from scratch.

This is the step-by-step procedure you need to follow for uninstalling e-Capsule™ Private Browser U3:

    • Go to U3 Launchpad » Manage U3 Programs.
    • Select e-Capsule™ Browser from the left panel and click Remove program.
    • During the application removal procedure you will be asked whether you wish to save your personal settings and data files of Private Browser. Click Yes.

To reinstall the e-Capsule™ Private Browser on your U3 drive you need to:

    • Go to U3 Launchpad » Add Programs » Install from my computer
    • Find the e-Capsule™ Safe U3 package and select it to launch the installation
    • If asked, don't accept usage of old settings and data but require the application to reset all values.
  11. I removed the U3 device while the e-Capsule™ Private Browser application was still running. The application closed but next time I tried to use it I got an error message saying something about corrupted data.

Most likely some file system blocks in use during the last operations you performed have been damaged and may not be recovered. However, in most cases the internal restore process will be able to fix these problems and allow you to login again after a clean restart. If you keep getting this error message it means that the damage cannot be fixed internally and you'll need to remove and reinstall the application from the U3 Launchpad. Please remember not to remove the USB device while the application is open and especially when the USB LED is blinking (i.e. when data is being written/read on the flash memory).

  12. I just purchased the e-Capsule™ Private Browser U3 product and I received an e-mail with a prepaid code. What is the license request and activation procedure I need to follow to unlock the trial version installed on my U3 device?

The license request and activation procedure you need to follow to unlock the trial version installed on your U3 device is the following:

    1. Login at the EISST website from this link:

      http://eisst.com/user/login/

using the login credentials listed in the e-Capsule™ Private Browser order confirmation email sent to you after your purchase.

    2. Launch the e-Capsule™ Private Browser application from the U3 Launchpad of the USB device on which you want to install the license.
    3. When you see the dialog window which prompts you to Try, Buy or Enter license, click: Buy now. You will be redirected to the EISST license request page.
    4. In the EISST license request page, choose I ALREADY HAVE A PREPAID LICENSE NUMBER option and enter (you can use Copy/Paste) the following license number:

      (xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx)

    5. Click PROCEED
    6. Please allow up to 24hrs for the license provisioning process to complete. You will then receive a last email with a link from which you can download the product license for your USB device. Save the license file in some location on your PC.
    7. Start the e-Capsule™ Private Browser again and click Enter license when you see the dialog box which invites you to either Try, Buy or Enter a valid license. Locate the downloaded license saved on your PC and click Open.

The downloaded license and the application will thus be fully installed and activated!

IMPORTANT: The e-Capsule™ Private Browser product license is restricted to the USB device used for requesting the purchase. In other words, the application can be used only from one single U3 device at a time since the product license is tied to one unit's serial number.
